Meet the jurors for Mālama Wao Akua 2022! Each year a different combination of jurors are invited to select artwork entered into the exhibit. The jurors represent a expertise in both art and science.
Gabrielle Anderman – Artist
Gabrielle has exhibited throughout the United States and is represented in public and private collections throughout the world. She graduated with the highest honors from UCLA’s school of the arts where she studied with noted artists including Lari Pittman, Barbara Drunker and Roger Herman. She spent a year abroad studying painting at the Beaux Arts Schools in Pau and Paris. She works with mixed media and has a developed a distinct style that flows between figuration and abstraction. She was raised in California and currently lives and works in Maui. HI.
Chuck Chimera – Botanist
Chuck Chimera left Buffalo, New York in 1991 for a 4-month volunteer stint at Haleakalā National Park, a position that awakened a previously unknown love of botany and resulted in an extended stay and conservation career in the Hawaiian Islands. Over the past 3 decades, he’s worked for the National Park Service, the USGS, and received a master’s degree in botany from the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa. He now works for the Hawaiʻi Invasive Species Council and lives in Honokaʻa, Hawaiʻi with his wife, and artist, Melissa Chimera and their son Theo. Since moving from Maui, he still gazes longingly at Haleakalā across the ʻAlenuihāhā Channel.
